K. Sivan was born in Sarakkalvilai, located near Nagercoil in the Kanyakumari district. He entered the world into a humble family where financial resources were scarce. His father, Kailasavadivoonadar, earned a livelihood as a cultivator of paddy and mangoes. Sivan actively assisted his father in tending to the farmlands and also engaged in the sale of mangoes within the local market.
Due to the constrained economic circumstances faced by his family, his siblings were unable to pursue higher education. In a noteworthy accomplishment, Sivan emerged as the first individual in his family to attain a graduate degree. Subsequently, he pursued his academic journey further and obtained a master’s degree in aerospace engineering from the esteemed Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore in the year 1982.
Embarking on his professional path, Sivan initiated his career within the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). His dedication and expertise propelled him to assume the position of Chief of ISRO in January of 2018. During his tenure, ISRO achieved a significant milestone with the launch of Chandrayaan 2, a mission to explore the moon.
Sivan’s remarkable contributions did not go unnoticed. In recognition of his outstanding achievements, he was honored with the prestigious Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Award in the year 2019.
