Helen Keller, born on June 27, 1880, in Tuscumbia, Alabama, and passing away on June 1, 1968, in Westport, Connecticut, was an American author and educator who overcame the challenges of being blind and deaf. Her remarkable educational journey is a testament to the possibilities for individuals with disabilities.
Stricken by an illness at 19 months old, possibly scarlet fever, Keller became blind and deaf. At six, she was examined by Alexander Graham Bell, who then arranged for Anne Sullivan, a 20-year-old teacher from the Perkins Institution for the Blind in Boston, to become her instructor. Sullivan’s teaching methods were innovative and effective, and she remained Keller’s companion and teacher until her death in October 1936.
Keller’s education began with learning to communicate through finger signals on her palm and progressed to reading raised words on cardboard and forming her own sentences. She spent winters between 1888 and 1890 at the Perkins Institution learning Braille. Her education continued with learning to speak under Sarah Fuller of the Horace Mann School for the Deaf and lip-reading by touching the speaker’s lips and throat. Keller attended the Wright-Humason School for the Deaf and the Cambridge School for Young Ladies, eventually earning admission to Radcliffe College, where she graduated cum laude in 1904. Her story is a powerful example of overcoming adversity through determination and innovative education.
