Turner’s journey began in a sharecropping family in rural Tennessee. Her passion for singing developed in her teenage years, and after relocating to St. Louis, Missouri, she became a prominent figure in the local rhythm-and-blues scene. In 1956, she met Ike Turner during a performance by his band, the Kings of Rhythm, and quickly joined the group. Adopting the stage name Tina Turner, her dynamic presence soon became the highlight of the ensemble, known as the Ike and Tina Turner Revue.

Despite initial struggles, the group achieved success with the hit single “A Fool in Love” in 1960, followed by a series of chart-topping singles. Tina and Ike Turner’s relationship led to a controversial marriage in 1962, with its legality questioned during their 1977 divorce proceedings, where Tina cited years of abuse and infidelity.

Their collaboration produced significant hits like the Phil Spector-produced “River Deep—Mountain High” (1966), a showcase of Spector’s “wall of sound” style, popular in Europe but less so in the U.S. The duo’s last major successes included covers of Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Proud Mary” (1971) and “Nutbush City Limits” (1973). The couple’s tumultuous relationship ended with their divorce in 1978, marking a new chapter in Tina Turner’s solo career.
