He won first time the Vizianagaram Vidhan Sabha constituency in 1978 as Janta party candidate. In 1982 he joined Telugu Desam Party and won state assembly elections of 1983, 1985, 1989, 1994, 1999 and 2009. He won 2014 Lok Sabha Election from Vizianagaram.
Ashok served Andhra Pradesh as a Cabinet Minister. Now he is fighting against BJP candidate P. sanyasi Raju in 2019 Lok Sabha Election.

He has completed his graduation from V.S. Krishna College, Visakhapatnam. His father Pusapati Vijayarama Gajapati Raju was also the member of Indian parliament and minister in the state government.
