Kalam’s academic journey in aeronautical engineering began at the Madras Institute of Technology. Post-graduation in 1958, he joined the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). His career took a turn in 1969 when he moved to the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). Here, he notably served as the project director of the SLV-III, India’s first indigenously designed and produced satellite launch vehicle. This achievement marked a milestone in India’s space research history.
In 1982, Kalam returned to the DRDO, where he spearheaded the development of various successful missiles. This period of his career was particularly distinguished by the creation of Agni, India’s first intermediate-range ballistic missile. Launched in 1989, Agni was a blend of technology from the SLV-III and other innovations. Kalam’s leadership in these missile projects earned him the moniker “Missile Man,” reflecting his crucial role in advancing India’s defense capabilities.
