Elizabeth, the eldest daughter of Prince Albert, Duke of York, and Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, was not originally expected to ascend to the throne. As the granddaughter of King George V, her chances were slim until her uncle, Edward VIII (later known as the Duke of Windsor), abdicated in favor of her father on December 11, 1936. This event led her father to become King George VI, positioning Elizabeth as the heir presumptive.
