He started his career as an assistant director in Lamhe movie which was released in 1991. After that he started his own production company “Excel Entertainment” and he debuts as a director in the movie “DIL CHAHTA HAI“. His movie Dil Chahta Hai won a national award. After Dil Chahta hai movie he has direct so many movies like “Lakshya“, “positive” etc.
His sister Zoya Akhtar is a writer-director. he started his career as an actor in the movie “the fakir of Venice” but his official debut with the movie “Rock On” which was a super hit movie.
